How I see & tell stories

We all have it in us. You just have to believe in yourself. Storytelling musings - and otras cositas - from Brenda T. Feldstein.

I'm Brenda T. Feldstein, a documentary filmmaker based in Buffalo, NY. I founded A Special Story to create human-centered films that showcase the beauty, complexity and strength of real people. To honor. To inspire. To change. To create connections.

My background in journalism shaped how I tell stories - often looking for different perspectives, understanding that people are unique, and always leading with empathy and curiosity. I've lost count of how many people I have interviewed over the years, but my most cherished stories are hard to forget: nonprofits making a difference in the community, refugees starting over, Holocaust survivors teaching resilience and hope, musicians making our world a better place without uttering a word, and so forth.

I firmly believe that only storytelling has the power to truly connect people: the moment you are able to immerse yourself in someone else's story, the capacity for understanding becomes extraordinary.

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.

Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.
